The sovereign barcode scanner for 1D barcode capture. The Gryphon 4200 scanner easily reads barcodes from both short and long distances, with high and low resolution. It also easily captures codes that are difficult to read, bad or damaged, as well as codes from mobile devices. Datalogic's motion sensor technology Motionix detects common operator movements and automatically puts the scanner into 'ready-to-read' scanning mode.

Versatile entry-level imaging scanner. The Datalogic Heron imaging scanners are entry-level scanners that impress with their variety of functions. The Heron imaging scanner comes with a stand station. The glossy black or white housing color enhances any point-of-sale (POS) application. If the scanner is removed from the station, it switches to manual mode - if it is stationary, it automatically switches to non-contact operation. Like all scanners from Datalogic, the Heron Imaginscanner also has “Green Spot” technology, which offers a read confirmation directly on the code.

Barcode scanners with laser modules or imager modules are used to capture information using 1D barcodes.

Do you need advice on choosing a suitable hand scanner?
1D and 2D codes at first glance

When viewed superficially, 1D codes and 2D codes can be easily distinguished. 1D codes are a sequence of bars and gaps of different widths, sometimes supplemented by rows of characters - a classic barcode. Since the lines are always arranged in a single row, this is called a one-dimensional code: 1D. 2D codes, on the other hand, are rectangular symbols that are mainly made up of dots or small squares, so-called modules, such as in QR codes or DataMatrix codes that we increasingly encounter in everyday life. The modules in 2D codes are not only arranged next to each other, but also on top of each other, so you get a second dimension: 2D.
Use of 1D codes

1D codes are most commonly found in everyday life. In supermarkets and furniture stores with EAN or UPC codes, in bookstores with ISBN numbers in code form - retailers have been relying on tried and tested products for over 40 years. In the logistics sector, packages are provided with barcodes - UPS has even developed its own 2D code with the MaxiCode - and even when sending letters, Deutsche Post applies a simple barcode, the so-called destination code, to the envelope. There are a variety of different 1D code types that are used depending on the application. The barcode creator can choose between code types for numeric or alphanumeric content, easy-to-create codes without a check digit or scan-safe codes with a check digit. A company in the supply chain often specifies the code type.

Reading a 1D code

The main advantage of a 1D code is, of course, that it is comparatively easy to apply and can also be read by barcode scanners. You don't need expensive printers or sensitive scanners. In the vast majority of cases, the code is printed directly on paper or a sticker. However, it is important to note that the lower the resolution of the printer, the larger the barcode must be displayed, as the information is transported through the exact width of the bars and gaps. The finer the barcode can be printed, the smaller it can be. Since the general structure of the code is comparatively simple, the requirements for the scanner are also relatively low. Normally these are simple CCD scanners with LEDs, so-called linear imagers, or more powerful laser scanners, although common scanners for 1D codes are not able to read 2D codes.

1D code:

  • System proven over decades
  • Compatibility with most existing scanners in the SupplyChain
  • Easy to manufacture and reproduce

1D codes are a sequence of black and white bars of different widths. Since the lines are always arranged in a single row, this is called a one-dimensional code. The most commonly used 1D codes are, for example, Code 39, Code 128, EAN, UPC and Code 2/5 interleaved.

The advantages of 1D codes are:

  • 1D codes have been established for a long time.
  • 1D codes are compatible with most existing scanners.
  • 1D codes are easy to produce and reproduce.

Whether 1D or 2D codes, whether 1D or 2D scanners – the selection of technology and technology should always be chosen with the application situation in mind. Are you unsure which code variant is better suited to your needs? Or have you already answered this question and are still looking for the right scanner? We will be happy to advise you and help you find the best solution!
