As part of logistics, transport is also integrated into the classical transport, handling and storage processes in many companies. Goods in transit are transported from one place to another. Transport will deliver selected items in the correct quantity and quality at the right time and to the designated located. Under transport, a distinction is made between external and inter-company transport and the internal transport of conveyors including, among others, forklifts, cranes and assembly lines.
The transport sector is divided into single- or multi-unit transport. Single-unit transports has only one transport route, i.e. the goods are transported directly from the consignor to the customer. Multi-unit transports are also called transport chains and have pre-carriages, main carriages, and on-carriages. The goods are picked up in advance at the consignor and taken to a nearby transfer point. The main carriage takes place at the transhipment point. From there, the goods are delivered to the recipient as an on-carriage.
